It's a Girl!

Lucy and her heifer calf Mimi, born 29th December 2011.

Lucy and Mimi.  Lucy is quite protective, but Mimi is very friendly and curious.

Mimi, 2 days old.  I love the little bottom lip stuck out!

wow, congrats, so cute! We think Bella is pregnant, so I hope we have the same good news in September! Do you have any advice for feeding during pregnancy? I keep meaning to read natural cattle care again, but just wondered if you have anything in particular that you find useful. Cheers, Liz

Our cattle are grass fed, they only really get fed from a bucket for minerals (mix a bit of chaff, molasses and powdered minerals/supplements) or when they are being milked. So I don't feed a pregnant heifer anything except her usual minerals. Closer to the big event, you can alter their supplements to prevent complications with milk fever, ketoisis, mastitis etc. Lots of info either in the book or on the Family Cow forum linked to on the right on this blog. :)

A girl is always a nice surprise in cow world, Will you be milking... Its a lot of work trust me! A great book on natural animal care is by Juliette de Bairacli Levy called The complete Herbal handbook for farm and Stable, It is wonderful really!

Hello Star! Yes, a girl was a lovely surprise! Lucy's last calf was a Wagyu/Jersey bull calf. Yes, I have been milking for almost all of the past 2.5 years and it *is* a lot of work, but worth it! I have that book, and it is very thorough. Thank you for the suggestion!
